Zaeem Zaidi, a scientist, yoga researcher, and certified yoga instructor who teaches the Yoga for Stroke Recovery , says that practicing yoga, which includes asanas (physical poses), breathing exercises, and meditation, can help balance the immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine systems as well as the body’s neurological system.

Zaidi explained that research has demonstrated that yoga and mindfulness improve overall health by improving memory function, self-awareness, compassion, and even gray matter density in addition to reducing the physical effects of stress and other chronic conditions.

Additionally, Zaidi argues that yoga’s anti-cardiovascular effects should be practiced by stroke survivors and that previous cardiovascular health research supports its inclusion in cardiac rehabilitation programs. Heart rate variability, blood pressure, body weight, lipid profile, glucose levels, and even left ventricular systolic function have all improved as a result of yoga.

Zaidi hopes that each stroke survivor taking this class will think about adding a weekly private training session to the group class so that each person’s needs and problems can be properly addressed.
