New book by Doug and Michele McMurry, 100 Years Of Building San Antonio, full of photographs and the history of the development of what was the largest city in Texas.
San Antonio
A century ago, San Antonio looked very different. Tall buildings, freeway overpasses, and corporate headquarters campuses were absent. Nor was the city home to the biggest grouping of army installations in the US.

By Doug McMurry, Hon. AIA San Antonio, and Michele McMurry
It was the largest city in Texas at the time, despite having little infrastructure. New buildings and the people who built them reflected the optimism and transformation in the economy that occurred after World War I and prior to the Great Depression. The development of the San Antonio River Walk was sparked by the construction of a dam in the 1920s. A world’s fair in the 1960s further established the Alamo City as a tourist destination and a leader in architectural innovation and building technology.
100 Years of Building San Antonio
“100 Years of Building San Antonio” reveals the stories behind such unique and iconic projects that have shaped San Antonio into America’s seventh largest city and the people who made them possible. It focuses primarily on commercial construction and notable renovations of iconic buildings.
According to Doug McMurry, it is also a story about how they invested in themselves and the environment that defines them.
Together with his co-author Michele McMurry, McMurry presents an entertaining and instructive narrative that takes place in real time. They use personal recollections of the people whose families pioneered the growth of Texas’s most distinctive city as well as material from archives and historical documents that have been lost in time.
