41.9 percent of European creators read webtoons, which are vertical comics typically read on smartphones, according to a new survey* conducted by Celsys, the developer and distributor of the illustration, manga, Webtoon, and animation app “Clip Studio Paint.”
European Creators Read Webtoons
The number of European Creators Read Webtoons was up from 2021, especially in France, where it was up 23.1 points. Webtoons were most popular with men in their 30s, indicating that increasing demand among young women may be the key to expanding the market. The survey also found a connection between those who enjoy drawing comics and those who read webtoons.
Overall, 41.9 percent of European creators said they read webtoons frequently or occasionally, up 7 points from the previous survey. This shows that the market for webtoons is growing steadily. By country, Germany maintained its high readership of 39.1%, making it the country with the highest webtoon readership in the previous survey. In the meantime, readership increased in the United Kingdom and France, with a notable increase of 23.1 points in France.

With 51.5% of respondents, France had the highest readership of webtoons among the four countries. Although 35.7 percent of respondents in Spain had never heard of webtoons, this is still a small decrease from the previous survey and suggests that webtoons are not yet widely known.
Who Reads Webtoons?
Male respondents read more webtoons than any other age group, with those in their 30s reading the most. Who Reads Webtoons reading increases with age. Women, on the other hand, read webtoons less frequently as they get older, with women in their teens and twenties reading the most of them. Male and female adolescents have similar numbers of readers. In light of this, maintaining the readership of young women who continue to read Webtoon into their thirties and beyond may be one key to further webtoon growth in the European market in the future.
Creating And Consuming
The majority of hobbyist artists create character illustrations and designs, followed by illustration and graphic design, according to a look at their art genres. 19.4% make Japanese-style manga and 8.4% make webtoons out of those who said they made comics. The results show that a significant number of respondents in France produce not only webtoons but also all kinds of comics, including American comics, Japanese-style manga, and bandes dessinées. This indicates a high affinity for comics on both the creation and consumption fronts. This suggests that more people are interested in making comics in countries with a large comics audience.
